Homework Help for Students with ADHD

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) is a common behavioral disorder.  It is estimated that 8 to 10 percent of school-age children are affected with ADHD. Homework can be a tough situation for a child with ADHD. There are some things that parents can do to help the student be moreproductive and have a better homework experience.

Behavioral therapy is an important part of treating student with ADHD.  Knowing the specifics of this therapy can help parents get on the right track with homework.

Behavioral therapy attempts to change behavior patterns by:
* giving very clear directions and commands (ADHD children don’t do well with too many options)
* by reorganizing a child’sschool and home environment
* establishing a reward system that gives consistent and appropriate rewards for good behavior * discipline used for negative behaviors should be quick, consistent, logical and appropriate

~ Prepare a distraction free homework area
A child who has been diagnosed with ADHD is easily distracted. A radio quietly playing in the background can keep the child from focusing. A window may lead to the child getting up and going outside to check things out.  Sit where the child is going to be seated and listen and look for distractions. Fix the problems.

~ Every thing has a place
Clutter is a big problem for a child with ADHD. Everything must have a place and it must be kept there.  These solid rules make sense to the child. It gives the child order and structure, which they crave. It is helpful with homework and with life skills.

~ Break up homework assignments into simple steps.
Just telling a child with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder  to go and do his homework is an unrealistic expectation. A child who has ADHD requires more attention to advert disaster. A homework session might look something like this.

“Jadyn, please read the first paragraph out loud.”

“Thank you Jadyn. Now go and answer questions one and four.”

“Great work Jadyn. Thank you for staying on task. Please read the second paragraph out loud.”

“Good focus, now answer questions two and three.”

This process continues until the homework is done.

~ Non-negotiable schedule
These children need a routine that is steady and true. Every day after school should be the same. They need to put their belongings in the same place. They need to establish  a process of where the homework is placed, have a healthy snack and then it is homework time. Every night is the same routine.

~ Good enough really is
Not every student is going to be a straight A student. It does not mean that these students are not successful. They have a good solid education and foundation. Make school more about learning and less about grades and the child who has ADHD will have a much better experience.
